GAROWE (Somaliguardian) – Brother of Somalia’s late president Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed has escaped an assassination attempt after blast ripped through a vehicle he was traveling in on Tuesday.
The man identified by local media as Warsame Yusuf Ahmed, who is a senior official with the semi-autonomous region’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was targeted with a roadside bomb while he was heading from home in the north of Galkayo town in Mudug region.
He survived the attack, though the blast damaged his vehicle which has later been removed from the scene of the explosion.
Security forces rushed to the scene and briefly halted traffic after the explosion. It has not been immediately known if there were casualties from the bombing.
No one has immediately claimed responsibility but the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab often carries out bombings and other attacks in the town and other major cities in Puntland.
The assault comes 10 days after militants raided a heavily guarded prison in Bosaso and freed at least 400 inmates including Al-Shabaab members. The group threatened more prison attacks in the region to free Islamist inmates and other citizens held “illegally” by authorities.
