MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A court in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Saturday acquitted two former directors of the Immigration Agency and an official with the Ministry of Finance on corruption charges.
The ruling to clear the prominent figures comes after their trial in absentia triggered a political uproar and accusations that authorities were targeting officials who had worked with the former administration of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
While the court absolved the three officials, it handed down sentences between two to four years in prison to five other state employees.
After coming to office, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud promised a crackdown on corruption and reforms in state institutions, though critics say authorities are only targeting low-level state employees while sparing influential figures and members of the president’s inner circle.
