Africom chief arrives in Mogadishu for talks with US, Somali officials

Michael Langley

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – New Africom chief Gen. Michael Langley arrived in Mogadishu on Monday for talks with US diplomats and Somali federal government officials, weeks after he had been appointed to replace Stephen Townsend, State TV reported.

Increasing cooperation and strengthening US support for Somali government’s fight against insurgents were among the issues discussed during a meeting at the heavily-fortified Halane base in Mogadishu, according to the Somali state broadcaster.

US ambassador to Somalia Larry Andre welcomed Gen. Langley to the Somali capital, US embassy said.

The visit comes months after US President Joe Biden authorized the redeployment of hundreds of American special forces to Somalia. A number of air strikes targeting Al-Shabaab-held areas in south Somalia have since been reported, including one that has taken place about two weeks ago in the central region of Hiran.
