Airport in Central Somalia Destroyed, a Day After Reconstruction Was Completed

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Al-Qaeda-aligned militants destroyed an airport in central Somalia’s Hiran region in a bomb attack on Sunday, hours after its reconstruction had been completed.

At least 1 person was killed and 5 others wounded when explosions rocked the airport in the town of Bulo-burde in Hiran region, the second attack of its kind to have targeted the airfield within a year.

Al-Shabaab said it had carried out the bombing and security officials said explosive devices used for the attack had been planted inside the airport before its renovation was completed.

The airport is under the control of Djibouti’s African Union forces and Somali government troops.

Buloburde has been under siege for militant multiple years since allied forces drove Al-Shabaab from the town and troops inside the small town receive supplies by air.
