MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Al-Qaeda-aligned Al-Shabaab militants launched a dawn attack on the town of Bal’ad, some 30 km from Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Saturday triggering clashes with security forces, local officials said.
The attackers using a vehicle packed with explosives stormed three security checkpoints manned by the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) and an office belonging to the agency.
In a statement, the insurgents claimed killing 13 soldiers and wounding a number of others, but the land forces commander of the Somali army asserted that troops had repulsed the attackers and killed 11 rebels. There has been no independent confirmation of the assertions by both sides.
