MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Al-Shabaab militants attacked Halane base in Mogadishu, which is home to several diplomatic missions including those of the United Nations, the United States and the United Kingdom, in the latest brazen attempt to disrupt ongoing polls, local media and a radio station affiliated with militants reported on Wednesday.

Heavy burst of gunfire was heard inside the base as insurgents exchanged gunfire with AMISOM troops guarding the heavily fortified zone inside the city’s Adan Adde International Airport. Fighting also disrupted work at the airport as staff ran for cover during the gun battle.

Al-Shabaab immediately claimed responsibility, saying its fighters had entered the heavy security base, an assertion which has yet to be confirmed by AMISOM troops and Somalia’s security forces.

The camp raided by militants was expected to host Somalia’s upcoming presidential election. Attackers were reportedly wearing uniforms for government’s security forces, a further indication of worsening insecurity in the capital where militants have been carrying out frequent attacks over the past weeks.
