Al-Shabaab Bombs Police Station After Taking Over Town in Central Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Al-Shabaab armed group in Somalia bombed a police station, army camp and the administration building of a town in the central region of Galmudug, residents said on Wednesday, hours after militants had taken several other nearby towns on Tuesday.

Militants entered the town of Eldhere, about 30 km south of Galmudug’s capital, Dhusamareb on Tuesday night as it they continue to threaten a key regional highway.

Last night the (Galmudug state) forces left and Al-Shabaab captured the town,” a resident in Eldhere Nur Hussein told Reuters news agency on Wednesday.

Regional officials said troops had been dispatched from the nearby towns of Guriel and Dhusamareb to dislodge militants.

Fighters of the Islamist group with links to Al-Qaeda captured the towns of Mataban, Bergadid and Ba’da in Hiran region, which are all on a key highway linking the capital to northern and central regions of the war-torn Horn of Africa nation. They later withdrew hours after being in control, residents said.
