Al-Shabaab Says It Has Distributed Aid in Drought-hit Areas in Central Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al-Shabaab said on Tuesday that it had distributed aid to hundreds of families in some of its strongholds in central Somalia’s Mudug region.

Photos circulated online by group’s media show hundreds of people receiving food and other relief items provided by the group. The aid distribution was made in Amara, Aad and Haradhere, according to Al-Shabaab-affiliated media.

The group earlier said its relief committee had distributed aid to hundreds of vulnerable families affected by drought in a number of districts in Bakol and Galgadud regions.

Somalia’s Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble declared a state of humanitarian emergency last year due to drought and water shortages, and called for relief campaign aimed at mitigating the crisis.
