MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least 20 people were killed on Friday night after Al-Shabaab militants ambushed a convoy carrying supplies for the town of Mahas in central Somalia, escorted by pro-government militias.
State media reported on Saturday that the attack targeted a convoy carrying food aid for the restive town whose outskirts have recently seen clashes between clan militias mobilized by government officials and militants. The local militias fought insurgents under the cover of US air support.
On Thursday, militants recaptured a town in the region that had been taken by local clan militias backed by government troops following heavy fighting.
Al-Shabaab media reported that those killed in the ambush were all Ma’wisley militias and that at least 8 vehicles were destroyed. The group also claimed capturing other vehicles.
There has been no independent confirmation of both sides’ claims due to the remote nature of where the attack took place.
