At least 4 injured as gunfire erupts at airport in Somaliland

HARGEISA (Somaliguardian) – An exchange of gunfire erupted at an airport in the town of Lasanod in the east of Somalia’s break-away region of Somaliland on Friday morning, leaving at least four people wounded.

The gunfight came shortly after a plane carrying khat from Kenya landed at Lasanod airport.

It followed a dispute between two khat traders over profit sharing. Clan militias supporting each of the two men clashed, bringing airport operations to standstill.

The rare incident has caused concerns over the safety of airports in the break-away region which has enjoyed a relative stability for decades, though authorities have not immediately commented on the fighting.
