MOGADISHU (Mogadishu) – At least 5 members of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) were killed and 14 others wounded after a car bomb struck their camp in the capital Mogadishu on Wednesday.

Among those killed was Fahad Salad Mohamed, the personal driver of NISA commander for the western sector of the capital. A car filled with explosives was rammed into a technical vehicle he was in at the gate of the camp.

Shabelle TV cited witnesses as saying that they had seen ambulances and vehicles belonging to the security forces racing with “many” dead and injured NISA personnel shortly after the bombing, though authorities have not yet discussed the details of the attack.

The explosion took place in Garasbaley district on the western suburbs of Mogadishu, where security forces have been conducting house-to-house searches over the past days to prevent possible militant attacks.

A second car bomb blast has taken place in Elasha-biyaha neighborhood on the outskirts of the capital, though casualties have not been immediately known.

Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group that has been fighting for more than a decade to topple the Somali government, has claimed responsibility.
