AU appoints new envoy to Somalia, months after rejecting Madeira’s expulsion

Mohammed El-Amine Souef

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The African Union has appointed Mohammed El-Amine Souef, a diplomat from Comoros, as its envoy to Somalia and the head of the African union Transition Mission in the country (ATMIS).

His appointment is “effective from September 2022”. It came months after former Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble expelled Souef’s predecessor after an audio of him discussing local politics was leaked.

At the time, Roble accused Madeira of “engaging in acts that are incompatible with his status”.
