MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The African Union Peace and Security Council on Friday endorsed the establishment of a new African Union-led peacekeeping mission in Somalia after the exit of ATMIS forces by the end of the year.

In a communique, the council said the new mission will support the Somali federal government in further degrading Al-Shabaab insurgents and restoring peace in the war-torn country while engaging in counter-terrorism operations.

The council also supported a request from Somalia’s government for slowing the drawdown of ATMIS peacekeepers to prevent a security vacuum that could enable Al-Shabaab insurgents to seize power in the country.
