MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) on Sunday handed over the security responsibility for the Horn of Africa country’s presidential palace.

In a ceremony attended by the country’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the head of ATMIS, Somali presidential guards officially shouldered the responsibility for protecting the complex, ending a 16-year presence of African Union peacekeepers inside the security perimeter of Villa Somalia.

“This is a significant milestone that is testament to the collective progress made over the years,” the office of Somali National Security Advisor said.
