AU peacekeepers in Somalia kill 6 children in artillery shelling

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – African Union peacekeepers in Somalia killed 6 children in an artillery strike, days after militants had overran a base manned by Ugandan troops, killing dozens of soldiers.

The shelling struck residential areas in Mudul Barawe village near the coastal town of Barawe in south Somalia killing at least 6 children from a single family, Caasimada Online news website reported on Monday.

It has not been immediately clear why the Ugandan peacekeepers shelled the village, but the artillery strike came days after Al-Shabaab militants attacked an ATMIS Forward Operating Base in the town of Bula Mareer, some 120km from Mogadishu, killing a number of soldiers and taking others as prisoners.
