MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – An armored military vehicle belonging to the African Union peacekeepers ran over civilians near Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Wednesday, killing two young men.
The incident triggered angry protests in Elasha Biyaha neighborhood on the outskirts of the capital. Videos circulated online showed residents throwing stones at the convoy of peacekeepers as they tried to flee the scene.
ATMIS troops opened fire on the protesters attempting to stop them from escaping, who also erected road blocks to prevent the peacekeepers from leaving the area.
African Union peacekeeping mission and Somali government have not yet commented on the incident.
Over the past decade, African Union troops killed dozens of Somali civilians in similar incidents. Last year, AU forces killed 7 civilians in the Lower Shabelle region, a move that triggered a wave of demonstrations in the capital Mogadishu.
