MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – US President Joe Biden and Congress leadership invited Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to visit Washington this month, Garowe Online news website reported on Tuesday.
It will be the first visit by Mohamud to Washington since his re-election in May.
Somali President had earlier visited Turkey, Kenya, Djibouti, the United Arab Emirates and a number of other countries.
The invitation from Washington comes weeks after Mohamud’s first 100 days ended without any progress made towards key policy issues, including security, fight against insurgency and mitigation of drought impact.
In support of the new Somali administration, Biden authorized the redeployment of US special forces to Somalia soon after Mohamud’s re-election and a number of air strikes targeting areas controlled by Al-Shabaab militants have since been reported.
The Somali leader earlier said Al-Shabaab is the greatest challenge facing his government and to overcome its threats, he called for extended support from the United States and other partner nations.
