MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Fighters of the militant group Al-Shabaab stormed a police post in Somalia’s capital on Wednesday night, days after the Al-Qaeda franchise renewed direct overnight attacks on compounds housing security forces in the city.

Heavily armed militants launched an overnight attack on a post in Wardhigley, a district where the presidential compound Villa Somalia, the parliament building and other government headquarters are located.

Huge explosions were heard across the city on Wednesday evening before a fierce of exchange of gunfire broke out in Furayasha neighborhood. The attackers used RPGs and grenades to launch the assault, followed by an exchange of heavy gunfire with police officers at the post, security officials said.

Gunfire lasted for more than an hour and the attackers escaped the scene.

Al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al-Shabaab says it was behind the attack. It gave no further details about casualties inflicted on both sides by the gunfight.

Grenades have also been separately thrown at security checkpoints in Wardhigley and Karan districts, but casualties have not been immediately clear.

The attack is the fourth of its kind to have taken place in Mogadishu this week alone and the federal government has not yet commented on the city’s deteriorating security amid opposition attempts to establish a parallel government as mandate of the current administration expires within a few months.
