MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Burundi has withdrawn 734 peacekeepers from Somalia in the second phase of troop drawdown between 23 and 27 December, 2024.
The troops were part of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), whose head earlier said about 3,000 peacekeepers will leave the war-torn Horn of Africa nation by the end of December.
ATMIS has recently handed over the security responsibility of the presidential palace to Somali government troops after guarding the complex for more than 15 years from attacks by Al-Shabaab. It also vacated the parliament compound which is not far from the president’s residence.
In the second phase of the troop drawdown, ATMIS is set to hand over about 10 military bases to the Somali army as the country grapples with the challenges of an ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab insurgents.
