Calls Grow for Broadening Somalia Electoral Talks

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Jubaland and Puntland regional states have called for broadening the upcoming electoral talks, scheduled to be held on February 15, to end dispute over the elections.

Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo called for a conference between federal and regional state leaders in the town of Garowe on February 15, though the authorities of the regional state later said they were not engaged in consultation over the announcement.

Puntland and Jubaland states issued statements on Monday, welcoming the president’s call for resumption of talks but urged the meeting to take place in Mogadishu.

The two regional states added their voices to growing calls that the opposition and international community representatives attend the conference. The federal government has not immediately commented on the statements.

Electoral talks held in the town of Dhusamareb collapsed last week after federal and regional leaders deadlocked over a number of contentious issues.
