MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least 14 people were killed and more than 140 wounded in an Al-Shabaab attack on a seaside hotel in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Friday, Caasimada Online news website reported.
Video recorded shortly after the attack shows dead bodies lying on Liido beach, where hundreds of residents had been swimming and others, including officials had been spending the night at nearby upscale hotels.
Security officials say a suicide bomber detonated an explosive vest outside Beach View Hotel followed by an infantry attack carried out by five other militant gunmen.
People, who had been rescued from the scene, told local media that the gunmen were throwing grenades and firing at every direction in and outside the hotel.
A prominent Somali journalist Abbdalla Ahmed Moumin, in a twitter post, puts death toll at 50, though authorities have not yet discussed the full details of assault, which comes amid a months-long lull in similar incidents and as authorities tighten security.
Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, in a statement on X, condemned the attack and sent his “deepest condolences to the families, relatives and friends of those who were martyred in these explosions.”
