Dozens of MPs, politicians gather at residence of Somalia’s ex-president

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Nearly 50 MPs and former government officials convened at the residence of ex-president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed in Mogadishu on Saturday night to discuss Somalia’s current political situation, Caasimada Online news website reported on Sunday.

The meeting, organized by Sharif, centered on various issues, particularly President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s recent threats regarding individuals in possession of illegal weapons, whether they be politicians or traders, stating that their homes will be raided even late at night.

During the meeting, attendees expressed concerns that the disarmament plan is currently impractical due to ongoing security challenges, which compel politicians to keep weapons for protection against Al-Shabaab attacks.

The meeting also addressed the upcoming elections and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s commitment to a one-person, one-vote system. Attendees emphasized that this goal is unlikely to be achievable given the limited time left in the government’s term and the significant challenges involved.

Over the past few months, Sharif has been rallying support among Hawiye clan leaders and politicians, emerging as the primary challenger to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in the 2026 elections, especially following the fallout between Farmajo and his right-hand man Fahad Yasin.
