Driver of Somalia’s former president defects to Al-Shabaab

Farmajo

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The driver of Somalia’s ex-president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo defected to the militant group Al-Shabaab, days after authorities said they had arrested 16 people accused of facilitating an attack on an upscale hotel near the presidential complex, Caasimada Online news website reported on Wednesday.

The man identified as Sahal Mohamed Hirsi sold a bulletproof vehicle belonging to the former President and traveled to the port city of Kismayo in Jubaland state before reaching one of the group’s stronghold towns in the region.

It came months after the driver of former parliament Speaker Mohamed Mursal surrendered himself to the group in the Lower Juba region, raising concerns about increasing defections of state employees and members of the security agencies to the insurgents.
