Egypt Sends Medical Aid to Help Somalia Tackle Coronavirus

CAIRO (Somaliguardian) – Egypt on Saturday sent medical aid to Somalia in line with directives of president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to the help the conflict-torn Horn of Africa nation battle a resurgence of COVID-19.

Somalia’s ambassador in Egypt Elias Sheikh Omar appreciated Egypt’s continous support to his country during the pandemic and emphasized historic relations between the two African countries. He expressed hope for more Egyptian and Arab League support to the Somali government.

A military plane took off from Cairo airport on Saturday morning carrying tons of medicines and medical supplies offered by the Egyptian ministry of health to Somalia, in an effort to help Somali authorities in the fight against coronavirus.

Egypt sent similar aid shipments to Somalia months earlier.

It came days after Somalia opened its first oxygen plant in the capital Mogadishu, sparking a ray of hope in the country where COVID-19 treatment has been largely unavailable to patients.
