MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud criticized Ethiopia for signing a controversial Memorandum of Understanding with Somaliland, asserting that the country cannot simultaneously host the African Union’s headquarters while violating its foundational principles and violating the sovereignty of its neighbors.
Speaking at Somalia’s parliament on Saturday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud dismissed claims that al-Shabaab would overtake the country in the absence of Ethiopian support as “unfounded” and characterized the rhetoric as intimidation.
Referring to military operations against al-Shabaab that began in mid-2022, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud asserted that the army had seized control many parts of the country from the militant group without Ethiopia while Ethiopian forces did not fire a single shell a day.
Somalia has demanded the withdrawal of all Ethiopian troops by December, while Ethiopia has expressed its willingness to continue participating in African Union military operations in the country.
