Ethiopia distances itself from truckloads of illegally smuggled weapons seized in Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia has distanced itself truckloads from weapons illegally smuggled into Somalia last week, which ended up in the hands of clan militias despite accusation that it had facilitated the purchase and transportation of the arms shipment.

In an interview with VOA Somali, a spokesperson for the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the issue has nothing to do with Ethiopia.

“The issue is unrelated to Ethiopia and falls within the responsibility of the federal government of Somalia to manage the registration, handling, and distribution of weapons at the national level,” spokesman of Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nebiyu Tedla said.

The illegal shipment of weapons was seized by clan militias, who ambushed its security detail near the border town of Abud Waq last week. No one has yet claimed the ownership of plundered weapons and no investigation has so far been conducted to establish who should be held responsible for the incident, which resulted in the death of nearly 20 people.
