MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia’s government said on Monday it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the President of Somaliland Muse Bihi Abdi in an effort to secure access to the break-away Somali region’s Red Sea ports.

“The Memorandum of Understanding shall pave the way to realize the aspiration of Ethiopia to secure access to the Red Sea and diversify its access to seaports. It also strengthens their security, economic and political partnership,” the office of the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said.

“The Memorandum of Understanding reaffirms the principled position of the Ethiopian Government to advance mutual interests through cooperation on the basis of reciprocity.”

Ethiopia said the agreement will usher in a new chapter of cooperation between Hargeisa and Addis Ababa, adding that it also has a significance for regional integration.
