MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A convoy of Ethiopian troops was ambushed on Saturday on the road linking the border town of El-barde to Hudur, the administrative capital of Bakool region, days after another Ethiopian military convoy had come under heavy attack in the neighboring region of Gedo.
Heavy fighting followed an ambush by insurgents on dozens of military vehicles transporting troops from the border area to Bakool region and there were reports of explosions, though casualties on both sides have not been immediately known.
Meanwhile, Al-Shabaab-affiliated media reported that several roadside bomb blasts had targeted Ethiopian troops on the highway between Baidoa and Burhakaba towns in Bay region, killing at least two soldiers. There has no been immediate verification of the claim and the Ethiopian military has yet to comment on the attack.
The series of assaults on Ethiopian troops in Somalia come after Al-Shabaab said on Tuesday its fighters had killed 173 Burundian African Union peacekeepers in a raid on a military base in El-baraf, some 160 km north of Mogadishu. A Burundian official put the death toll at 30, saying more than a dozen soldiers were missing. read more
