MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister Taye-Atske Selassie said the country’s access to Somalia’s Red Sea coast is crucial for its stability and national security amid growing calls for Addis Ababa to abandon a controversial deal with the breakaway region of Somaliland, Addis Standard reported on Tuesday.
Speaking to Ethiopian state media, Selassie said “direct access to the sea is a matter of our stability and national security”, adding that Addis Ababa’s deal with the breakaway region of Somaliland is “very legitimate.”
In response to foreign pressure on Addis Ababa, he stated that “Ethiopia has no history of embracing foreign commands and dictations. But, it will negotiate in some cases for the benefit of all.”
