Ethiopia’s ambition to reach our coastline by force is a dream that will not come true: Somali president

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Saturday accused Ethiopia of refusing to recognize the sovereignty of his country and of pursuing ambitions to annex parts of Somalia’s coastline, adding that such attempts represent a dream that will not come true.

“Ethiopia’s desire to claim parts of the Republic of Somalia, established in 1960, is both unfounded and aggressive… Our resolve has been tested before, and we have defended our territory successfully. This time will be no different,” Mohamud said in a speech to the nation.

“Ethiopia’s ambition to reach our coastline by force is a dream that will not come true,” he added.

The Somali leader reiterated that Ethiopia’s refusal to recognize the independence of his country is a clear indication of its disregard for the international law, attributing the recent collapse of Turkey-mediated talks between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa to Ethiopia’s unchanged stance that “reflects a persistent denial of our status as an independent neighboring country.”

In an attempt to soothe growing public anger over his government’s talks with Addis Ababa, Mohamud stressed that Somalia’s sovereignty is non-negotiable and his government will continue to stand firm against any attempts to undermine it, both diplomatically and through force.
