MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borell arrived in Mogadishu on Sunday for talks with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, presidential office said.
The two “explored ways to strengthen the multifaceted & strategic ties between the two sides”, Villa Somalia said in a statement.
“During the meeting, they also discussed the collaboration with the European Union in the areas of maritime security, democratization and inclusive politics, as well as the EU’s role in supporting Somalia’s response to climate-driven humanitarian challenges & food insecurity,” it added.
Due to worsening insecurity in the Somali capital, the meeting took place inside the heavily-fortified Halane base in Mogadishu which is home to a number of diplomatic missions, including those of the United States, United Nations and the European Union.
Borell is also expected to meet with Somali regional leaders, who have arrived in Mogadishu on Saturday for the National Consultative Council meeting in which both the federal government and federal member states will explore all possible avenues to resolve long-standing disputes over power and resource-sharing mechanisms. read more
