MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – EU Foreign Policy chief Josep Borell is set to arrive in Somalia’s Mogadishu on Sunday where he is due to meet with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and other government officials, Caasimada Online news website reported.
It will be his first visit to the Horn of Africa nation and will follow a recent trip to the country by the UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths, who said the country was facing dire humanitarian situation due to a prolonged drought.
It is possible that the EU official meets with the leaders of regional states, who have arrived in Mogadishu for talks to end dispute with the federal authorities.
The visit is intended to shed the light on the impact of worsening drought in Somalia as aid agencies warn that famine risk in many of the country’s regions if the international community fails to provide much needed assistance.
He is expected to discuss with Somali leaders EU’s continued support for the federal government, weeks after the body announced that it had reversed decision to suspend funding support for Mogadishu.
