MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The European Union lifted suspension of budget support for Somalia following the re-election of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as the Horn of Africa country’s President in May, Caasimada Online news website reported on Saturday.
The EU suspended budget support for Somalia after former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo failed to hold elections and attempted to extend his term, triggering street battles in Mogadishu between an army faction supporting his decision and another allied with opposition leaders.
Following recent talks between EU diplomats and Somali President, the body’s commissioner for International Partnerships said Somalia’s new administration would soon be granted €13.5 million to help its reform and development agenda.
In addition, the EU will donate €125 million of budget funding to Somalia in 2022. The decision has come days after parliament approved a budget of more $900 million for this year.
