Ex-Somali Defense Minister Briefly Detained in Baidoa

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Security forces of Southwest regional state briefly detained on Friday the former Somali Minister of Defense Abdirishid Abdullahi Mohamed, days after he had returned to the town of Baidoa amid dispute with regional leader Abdiasis Laftagaren.

Regional troops arrested Abdirashid while he stayed at a hotel in Baidoa on Friday night, in what elders representing him described as a politically motivated detention.

The former minister, who is now running for a parliamentary seat in Baidoa, has been a staunch opponent of Southwest President Abdiasis Laftagaren, who is known for his heavy-handedness against critics.

Southwest authorities have not immediately commented on the arrest, though the former federal official has been later released following interference from traditional leaders.
