Fierce gun battles rage in central Somalia after militants attack army bases

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab launched a daring attack on Saturday targeting Somali army bases nestled within El-dheer town, located in the Galgadud region of central Somalia, state TV and media affiliated with insurgents reported.

In a statement published on Al-Shabaab-affiliated news outlets, the group claimed overrunning four military bases and seizing a number of military vehicles.

The town, already a focal point for security concerns, found itself thrust into chaos as the militants engaged in a brazen attempt to establish dominance in the region.

However, Somalia’s army swiftly responded to the assertion, denying the claims of the militants and asserting their repulsion of the assault. There has been no independent confirmation of the assertions by the two sides.

The clash underscores the ongoing security challenges facing Somalia’s central regions, highlighting the delicate balance of power and the persistent threat posed by militant group, which has previously retaken at least six other towns in the region.
