MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Fighting resumed in northern Somalia’s Lasanod town on Saturday hours after authorities of the break-away region of Somaliland declared a unilateral ceasefire.
Clashes broke out in the town following days-long gun battle that left dozens of people dead and forced tens of thousands of residents from their neighborhoods.
Mortar rounds landed on residential areas and a hospital in the town, killing a humanitarian worker, as local officials accuse Somaliland troops of indiscriminate shelling targeting densely-populated areas in Lasanod.
In a meeting held on Saturday, local traditional leaders welcomed a unilateral ceasefire announced by Somaliland and called on the authorities of the separatist region to pull out their troops from the town. They also urged the international community to send a fact-finding mission to Lasanod.
