Fighting resumes in northern Somalia’s Lasanod town after Ethiopia sends mediators

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Heavy fighting between Somaliland troops and local forces again erupted in northern Somalia’s Lasanod town on Monday after Ethiopian government sent mediators.

Both sides traded accusations over the start of the fighting despite attempts by Ethiopian authorities to mediate an end to the weeks-long conflict.

Somaliland troops shelled a number of neighborhoods in the town and cracks of gunfire were heard across the restive town early on Monday morning. Casualties have not been immediately known.

Puntland leader Saeed Abdullahi Deni on Monday welcomed efforts by the government of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to pressure both sides to end the conflict and stressed that Somaliland authorities will be held accountable for atrocities committed in Lasanod.
