Flight carrying officials to Somalia’s Garbaharey town forced to make U-turn

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A flight carrying regional officials recently appointed by the President of Jubaland State Ahmed Madobe was denied permission to land at an airport in the southern Somalia town of Garbaharey on Tuesday and was forced to return to Mogadishu.

The move came after Gedo regional officials in control of the town had refused Jubaland’s appointees to arrive in the region, saying that they have no legitimacy to govern in regional cities amid heated dispute with the federal government.

Officials in Gedo region, who had been loyal to the administration of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, earlier accused Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre of imposing an air blockade on cities in the region.
