MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Al-Shabaab gunmen stormed a popular seaside hotel in the Somali coastal town of Kismayo on Sunday, which is frequented by regional officials and politicians, triggering heavy gun battle with security forces.
Militants blasted their way into the Tawakal Hotel using a vehicle packed with explosives, according to local media reports.
Al-Shabaab has immediately claimed responsibility, saying its fighters managed to burst their way into the heavily-guarded hotel complex.
Details on casualties are still scarce and residents in Kismayo describe hearing heavy exchange of gunfire and explosions.
