MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s former spy chief Fahad Yasin Haji Dahir said on Sunday that the incumbent President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s actions triggered a constitutional crisis and political power struggles similar to those that the country experienced during his previous term in 2012.
“Upon assuming office, President Hassan Sheikh inherited a nation governed by a single Constitution. However, within a brief span of two years, the nation finds itself grappling with the complexities of dual constitutional frameworks,” Fahad said in a post on X.
“His approach is sending the nation back to the tumultuous stages of the Garowe 1 and 2 constitutional negotiations. In Somalia’s history, from 1960 until the present day, Hassan Sheikh is the first democratically elected President to diverge from the constitution he swore to uphold, opting for a disputed alternative,” he added.
The former powerful intelligence chief and the right-hand man of ex-President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo asserts that Mohamud’s actions “resemble those of a leader who seized power through a coup.”
