MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Heavy mortar fire rocked Somalia’s capital on Thursday as shells slammed into Aden Adde International Airport, the latest in a series of assaults targeting the once-secure aviation hub that also hosts foreign diplomatic missions.
The attack, whose immediate casualties remain unclear, marks another brazen strike on a facility housing the diplomatic compounds of the United States, European Union, United Nations, and United Kingdom—all of which have faced repeated mortar bombardment in recent months.
Last month, a similar barrage damaged the airport’s runway, incinerated parked vehicles, and reportedly killed Ugandan security personnel. Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabaab group claimed responsibility for the attack.
Once considered Mogadishu’s safest site, the airport has increasingly become a focal point for attacks, raising alarms over the vulnerability of diplomatic and aviation infrastructure in the conflict-ridden Horn of Africa nation. Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the extent of the damage or possible casualties.
