Mogadishu fire: Huge blaze destroys shops in Somalia’s capital

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A massive fire broke out at a market along Banadir Junction-Digfer Hospital in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Thursday night, destroying dozens of shops and injuring a number of firefighters.

A local municipality official told media that several firemen sustained non-life threatening injuries from the blaze that continued to rage from evening until late night on Thursday, the most devastating inferno the city has seen over the past years.

Images circulated online showed fire pillowing thick black smoke into the night sky as traders scrambled to recover their belongings. Firefighters and residents in nearby neighborhoods were helping efforts to contain the spread of the flames.

Business people who lost their shops said an electrical fault was the leading cause of the fire, though authorities have not yet established the cause of the blaze. Traders called for urgent support from the new government to rebuild their shops.
