WASHINGTON (Somaliguardian) – US congresswoman Ilhan Omar said on Monday it was time for Somalia’s president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, whose term expired a year ago, to leave office and long-delayed polls proceed.
It comes after United States said it was prepared to act against those who obstruct Somalia’s path to peace, saying the attempted suspension of the Prime Minister was “alarming” and expressed support for Premier’s efforts to hold credible elections.
“Farmaajo is a year past his mandate. It’s time for him to step aside, and for long overdue elections to proceed as soon as possible,” US congresswoman Ilhan Omar tweeted.
In a statement issued by its embassy, the United States called on Somalia’s leaders to “de-escalate tensions and refrain from all provocations or use of force “.
