MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – An intelligence officer is among 21 soldiers killed in roadside blasts in Kenya’s Lamu County, Al-Qaeda-affiliated militant group Al-Shabaab claimed on Sunday.

A roadside explosion struck a truck carrying more than 20 Kenyan government soldiers, killing all those who were onboard, the militant group said.

The blast occurred on the road linking between the villages of Sankuran and Kayunga in Lamu County and destroyed the targeted truck, according to media affiliated with insurgents.

Militants said a Kenyan intelligence officer was killed in a separate attack and gave no further details. Kenyan security forces and authorities in Lamu County have not immediately commented on the claims.

Meanwhile, six people have been confirmed dead and several others wounded in Mpeketoni area of Lamu County, in an attack residents said could be linked to local political strife.

Attackers used crude weapons and pangas, and torched several houses, according to Nation Africa newspaper.

We are working on the issue as we establish how many houses were burnt and people injured. We shall share more information soon but we have cordoned off the area trying get the perpetrators,” Lamu police commander Moses Mureith said.

Similar attacks left more than 60 people in the area in 2014 and following investigations, police asserted that the assaults were organized by local politicians with links to a network of gangs.
