Inter-clan fighting kills at least 30 in Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least 30 people, including women and children were killed after fierce clashes between two clan militias erupted in the villages of Bur Shiiq and Biyo Cadde in south Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region on Sunday, Caasimada Online news website reported.

The gun battles continued through the evening, forcing residents in the two villages and neighboring rural areas to flee their homes.

It comes a week after Somali authorities mediated a truce between two clans in the region to end weeks-long fighting that led to the death of civilians and destruction of property. Somalia’s spy chief who spoke at the event threatened that the government will spare no effort to bring people fueling clan conflicts to justice.

Since Somali army alongside clan militias seized swathes of territory in the region from Al-Shabaab in 2022, dozens of people have been killed in inter-communal clashes in Hiran and Middle Shabelle regions. Despite authorities promising accountability, such conflicts show no sign of abating.
