TEHRAN (Somaliguardian) – An Iranian warship has repelled an attack by Somali pirates, who were trying to hijack two Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Aden, state television reported on Saturday.

Admiral Sahram Irani, commander of Iran’s navy termed the incident as a “maritime terrorism”, saying that the two Iranian oil tankers came under attack from pirates commanding five boats.

Iranian military vessels, which included the Alborz destroyer, foiled the attack, he added.

The attacking boats were forced to leave the scene and their offensive was repelled through the timely response of commandoes” on board the vessels who shot at them, Irani said.

The Iranian commander stressed that the two unnamed tankers passed safely through the area where the attack had taken place.

It comes after Iran’s navy increased its escort operations in the Gulf of Aden to protect Iranian ships from Somali pirate attacks.
