Israel approaches Somalia to resettle Gazans

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Israel has approached Somalia’s government with a proposal to resettle Palestinians from Gaza, the Financial Times reported on Friday.

The move comes as Israeli authorities, backed by the United States, seek to displace Gazans from the enclave, which has been rendered uninhabitable after more than a year of devastating war.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the report revealed that Israel urged Mogadishu to accept Palestinians evicted from Gaza after several Arab nations rejected similar proposals.

The specifics of what Somalia would gain in return remain undisclosed. It is unclear whether Somalia has accepted or rejected the proposal. However, Israel has reportedly made similar overtures to Sudan, another nation grappling with internal conflict, as part of its efforts to relocate Gazans.

In a related development, the Financial Times also reported that the U.S. has engaged with authorities in Somaliland, a breakaway region in northern Somalia, to discuss resettling Palestinians.

U.S. President Donald Trump has advocated for the displacement of Gazans, envisioning Gaza as a “Riviera of the Middle East.”

Somaliland was reportedly offered international recognition in exchange for accepting the proposal, alongside the construction of a U.S. military base in Berbera, a strategic port city along the Red Sea.

Responding to the report on Friday, Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi reiterated his government’s stance, stating that Somalia will not support the displacement of Palestinians. He emphasized that Somalia stands in solidarity with other Arab League nations in condemning such plans.
