MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A barrage of mortar bombs on Thursday struck a venue for the swearing in of new parliamentarians in the heavily fortified Halane base in Somalia’s capital.
Several MPs were inside the hall and others were heading to venue in Afisyoni camp as the area came under heavy mortar fire. Some of the shells missed target and struck areas near Adan Adde Airport in Mogadishu.
Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab said it had carried out the attack, in an apparent attempt to disrupt an anticipated swearing in ceremony for new MPs and Senators. Casualties have not been immediately known.
On Wednesday, MPs of the bicameral parliament were told to arrive at the General Kahiye Police Academy where they would be transported by buses to Afisyoni tent.
