MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Leader of Somaliland’s main opposition party Abdirahman Abdillahi Irro said on Tuesday that he would not recognize Muse Bihi Abdi as the break-away region’s President if he delays an upcoming presidential election slated for November 13.
In a speech to parliament on Monday, the region’s incumbent President Muse Bihi Abdi said he was committed to hold the vote but would engage in consultations with other political stakeholders should the process be postponed due to potential impeding circumstances, in what opposition figures described as a justification for Bihi’s attempts not to hold the election on its due date.
The presidential candidate of Waddani opposition party said the Somaliland “has tread the path of dictatorship” and urged his supporters to be ready for any possible scenario, vowing to confront any effort aimed at delaying the vote.
He accused Muse Bihi of disbanding the electoral commission and of lifting election laws in his first step towards postponement of the upcoming presidential vote. Somaliland President and his office have not yet commented on the allegation.
