MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – In a meeting held in Mogadishu on Thursday, politicians and intellectuals from the northeastern semi-autonomous region of Puntland said they would no longer recognize Saeed Abdullahi Deni as region’s President, weeks after he had announced run for Somalia’s presidency.
Deni announced his candidacy last month for an upcoming presidential election scheduled to be held in Somalia’s capital, saying removing the incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo was a priority for his bid. read more
In a communique, a group of politicians and intellectuals from the region said “Saeed Abdullahi Deni is a candidate not a president of Puntland” and accused the regional leader of instigating clashes in the commercial port city of Bosaso and of dividing traditional leaders.
It comes days after another group of regional politicians from the region, including former Somali Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid asked Deni to resign before launching his presidential campaign. They also said the regional leader is unfit for the top office and has failed to promote peace and reconciliation in a relatively peaceful region. read more
